A conventional fire alarm call point is a manual device that triggers the fire alarm system when activated. Commonly known as "break glass" units, they’re installed in key locations to allow building occupants to raise an alarm in the event of fire.
Manual call points should be installed on escape routes, near building exits, stairwells, and within 30 metres of any point in the building, as per BS 5839. In high-risk areas, such as kitchens or workshops, extra units may be required.
Break glass call points use a glass or plastic element that must be physically broken to activate the alarm. Resettable call points can be reused after activation with a reset key, making them ideal for high-traffic or vandal-prone areas.
No, conventional call points are designed to work with conventional fire alarm panels. If you have an addressable system, you’ll need addressable call points that communicate specific device addresses to the panel.
