Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and detectors are designed to identify the presence of this poisonous, odourless, and invisible gas, undetectable by humans. CO can be produced by faulty fuel-burning appliances or unburnt fuels. To protect against carbon monoxide poisoning, we recommend installing detectors near fuel-burning appliances, such as gas stoves.

More on Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors

What is carbon monoxide and why is it dangerous? Open

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas produced when fuels like gas, coal, wood or oil do not burn fully. It can cause serious illness or death as it prevents the blood from carrying oxygen around the body.

How often should I test my carbon monoxide alarm? Open

Press the test button weekly to make sure the sounder and LEDs work. Replace the alarm when it signals end-of-life or after 7–10 years, depending on the model.

Why don't you sell a combined smoke and CO alarm? Open

We recommend using dedicated alarms. Smoke and CO spread differently, so having separate detectors ensures each can be placed in the most effective location.

Can carbon monoxide alarms be interlinked like smoke alarms? Open

Some models can. Interlinked CO alarms are useful in larger homes or HMOs because if one alarm detects carbon monoxide, all connected alarms will sound. This ensures everyone in the property is alerted, even if the danger is in another room.

Should carbon monoxide alarms be wall mounted, ceiling mounted or free-standing? Open

CO alarms can usually be mounted on a wall at breathing height or placed free-standing on a shelf, depending on the manufacturer’s instructions. Ceiling mounting is also an option if recommended. The key is to follow BS EN 50292 siting guidance and install alarms 1–3 metres from the potential source, avoiding bathrooms or directly above fuel-burning appliances.
